3 Tips To Sing Better With Powerful Vocals

We would like to congrate you on taking this action. Trust us, first step is always a little bit hard to go through but once you mastered all the techniques, you’ll be a better singer! These are our 3 tips for you to improve your singing!

1.Open Your Mouth to Sing

With the mouth, close or not opening wide enough, your singing tone will remain suppressed or hidden-sounding. You must create sufficient space for the sound to come out. Don’t be too conscious about your mouth opening. You must understand this question,” How will your tone ring unless your mouth is open enough for it to? Have you ever seen a singer close up and personal on television? They open their mouth wide when they sing.

So elevate your singing by keeping the mouth open as you sing. You will immediately hear a more powerful voice.

To make sure that the mouth is open wide enough, you can place two fingers (one on top of the other) between the top and bottom teeth. Keeping the fingers in the mouth sing ‘ahhh,’ then remove the fingers from the mouth while still projecting the ‘ahhh’ sound. Did your mouth remain open after taking out your fingers?

One of the exercises that could help you to train your mouth and jaw to the right position for singing words using the ‘ahhh’ vowel is

  1. While using a mirror to check for your mouth openness, sing the following words in a medium, comfortable tone: stars, laugh, cars, mother, call, wall, call,
  2. Make sure that you can sustain the vowel ‘ahhh’ for a few seconds before ending the word with the final consonant.
  3. As you repeatedly rehearse each word, start off by going very slow. Gradually build your pace until you can sing through the list at a faster pace.

    2. Learn to breath properly when you sing

Belly breathing, or another way of saying it, diaphragmatic breathing, is important for you to produce a better sounding singing voice. This is because the tone that you sing actually “rides” on the air that is being exhaled when you are singing.

When you do any phonations (speaking/singing), air causes vibrations to occur which produces sound and will continue until you run out of air. If you are currently breathing using your lungs, you will not only run out of air too early, but you’ll also have a weak and breathy sound.

Learning how to inhale by inflating around your waistline takes practice but it’s essential. As you repeat the belly breathing exercise, you’ll be able to sustain more breath when you sing and also to be able to project more powerful voices.

Learning to breath using your belly/ diaphragms breathing

  1. Lie on your back flat on the floor with both of your feet close up.
  2. Place a light book (preferably with hard cover) on your stomach centered at the waistline.
  3. Once you feel completely relaxed, quickly lift the book using only your belly, which will then move upward.
  4. Hold this position for 5- 10 seconds.
  5. Now, lower the book very slowly until the belly returns to its original flat position. By lowering the book slowly, you are matching what happens as you sing. You must control your breathing by measuring the air carefully to prevent running out of air too soon. This exercise will help you to control the amount of air your release so that you have enough to finish the phrase of lyrics.
  6. Repeat this exercise for a few times and try using a hissing sound as you release your air while lowering the book.
  7. After that, you could replace the hissing sound with a singing tone on an easy pitch. You will soon see how you are learning to maintain and control the amount of air you release during exhalation.
  8. Keep repeating this exercise by breathing through your mouth, not through your nose.

When you have mastered breathing through your belly on the floor, try the same exercise in a standing position. Try to remember how you tried to lift up the book using your belly while you are on the floor but this time without depending putting the book on your belly. Place your hand where the book was positioned in the floor exercise. Try to feel for the expansion around the waist and lower ribcage area when you inhale and exhale.

Lastly, don’t forget to always keep your shoulders down when you breathe, avoid lifting your shoulders at all, be still.

3.Using the Right “Singing Instruments” to sing

Discovering how to activate your singing resonators is important. Your resonators are the mouth, nasal passages, chest, and head areas.

  • Transferring the sound forward means that when you sing, you make your tone resonate in these different spaces. At first, practice using the ‘ee’ vowel when you sing. This will help you to feel the vibrations in your resonating areas much easier.
  • You want to avoid “singing in the bubble” (singing from the back of the throat) the vowels as you sing. You have to learn to carry your voice forward.
  • When you are familiar with words like register, chest voice etc., these are essentially just common labels used to describe the difference in placementthroughout the singer’s range. Each of these registers vibrate when sound is produced.


“Singing Instruments” which was created by me, referring to parts of the body that help you sing, which is diaphrams, chest and head. Of course, there’s support system to help you to sing too. For example, your nose, spine, ears and throat.

Please kindly take not that throat should not be the primary singing instrument for you to use to sing as it could really damage your throat if you are not singing carefully, especially vocals that need you to belt.
